Emerald is a commissioned piece.
Painting size: 30" x 40" (76 x 102cm)
This emerald and gold piece is meant to be passed down by the collector to the next generation as a family heirloom of sorts, and the brief was unique and challenging but so incredibly rewarding to take on.
Commissioned by a parent for their child, the brief was to create a painting that carries the spirit of courage and resilience, something that their child could look upon in difficult times and draw strength from. It's a painting that needs to weather the vicissitudes of life, to be a source of comfort and strength when the parents are gone.
I found the brief incredibly moving, especially now having firsthand experience of the complexities of emotions that come with parenthood.
In reflecting this spirit of resilience, I've done something that I'd never done in my previous pieces. Aside from adding layers to create the painting, I'd deliberately removed some parts, erasing some parts of some layers.
My hope is that the act of taking things away in the creation process becomes part of the message embodied by this painting - a reminder for us all that in life, we needn't be discouraged by what feels like a setback, because progress is rarely linear in life.
Sometimes, true progress will feel like two steps forward, one step back. That constant iteration of adding, subtracting, editing and finetuning is precisely what created the final painting, and so it is with life.
